Parking lots may seem low-risk for driving. However, they are a common place for fender benders and near misses. Fast-moving vehicles, distracted drivers, limited visibility, and inclement weather can create hazards for everyone. Parking lots can be much safer when everyone slows down, stays aware of their surroundings, and follows these simple safety tips.
- Slow down and observe posted speed limits throughout the parking lot. Is a collision or fatality worth getting to your destination a bit sooner?
- Use your turn signal when entering a parking space to alert other drivers.
- Choose a parking space with plenty of room on both sides whenever possible.
- Pull through a space when permitted so you can carefully drive forward when leaving.
- Park between the lines and choose a space that fits your vehicle. If possible, park in a less crowded area to reduce the risk of door dings, and other damage and always prioritize your personal safety.
- Lock your vehicle and close all windows, even if you are away for a short time.
- Watch for pedestrians, shopping carts, cyclists, and children who may appear unexpectedly.
- Check mirrors, cameras, and blind spots before backing out. Use backup cameras and parking sensors as aids, but do not rely on them exclusively.
- Back out slowly and stop if you can’t see clearly or if someone or something crosses your path.
- Avoid driving while distracted by phones, navigation systems, or conversations — even in a parking lot at lower speeds. Distracted driving is never okay.
- Be especially cautious near store entrances where pedestrian traffic is highest.
- Keep a safe distance from moving vehicles, even at low parking lot speeds.
- Yield to vehicles that are already backing out or have the right of way. Many accidents could be avoided if drivers had waited for others to back out.
- Take a few seconds to look around before getting in and moving your vehicle. A little patience can help prevent accidents.
- Give other vehicles extra space when maneuvering through tight aisles.
- As a pedestrian, stay aware of moving vehicles and watch for drivers backing out of parking spaces.
- Keep your fob or keys ready before reaching your car to minimize the time spent standing in the parking lot. When you enter the car, lock the doors, and avoid lingering for an extended period.
- Kindness and patience can go a long way in a parking lot or parking garage. Stop for pedestrians, don’t cause traffic jams waiting for the perfect spot, and keep your cool.
