Tips To Create A Home Inventory

Home Inventory 444980080 800x600

October 25, 2024 //  by ABIMarketing

If you were to experience theft, fire, or another disaster in your home, do you have an inventory of your personal property? In the event of a covered loss, it may be hard to remember everything you own, even if only a few rooms were impacted. As a property owner or renter, an up-to-date inventory is essential and could help in the event a claim needs to be filed.

Creating a home inventory may seem daunting at first. However, smartphones have made the process easier. A good place to start is to use your phone to record a video of your home’s contents.  A video recording can provide a launching point for creating a more detailed home inventory. Once you have recorded a video, add to the inventory with photos, notes, appraisals, and receipts.

Here are some ideas on how to get started.

  • Record a video of each room. Open drawers, cabinets, and closets and record the contents in each. Look behind cabinets and furniture, and under beds in case you have stored forgotten items in these areas. Remember to include items in the garage, attic, and storage closets.
  • Take pictures of each room. Include photos of jewelry, artwork, and other valuables. For expensive items, like electronics and tools, include a photo of the serial number for each.
  • Create a written list of items in each room and add details to your inventory. Note an item’s condition, approximate purchase date, and value. If available, include copies of appraisals for expensive items and receipts.
  • If you decorate for holidays, add those decorations to your home inventory including outdoor decorations and light displays.
  • Include a home appraisal in your documentation. In the event of a loss, the appraisal will help a claims adjuster understand your home’s features and amenities.
  • Store your documentation in a safety deposit box or other secure location. It may also be prudent to make a copy and store it off-site with a trusted relative.
  • Remember to document new purchases as you make them and save or take pictures of receipts.
  • Keep your home inventory current by revising it every year or every other year.
  • Home inventory apps are also available if you prefer to use one. However, some apps require a fee.

If you only have time to complete a video of your belongings, at least you have something to reference in the event of a covered loss. Once your video is complete, build on it with additional documentation.
