While wet winter weather helped dampen the many wildfires that were raging in Southern Oregon throughout the summer, multiple parts of California continued to see catastrophic damages from recent blazes.

Located in rural Butte County in Northern California, the Camp Fire is the deadliest fire ever recorded in the state’s entire history. It also has the unfortunate distinction of being the deadliest fire in the United States in the last 100 years.

The Camp Fire scorched over 150,000 acres. More than 80 people perished in the fire and over 50,000 people were evacuated once it hit. The city of Paradise was lost in the Camp Fire. It destroyed over 17,000 structures that included over 100 apartment buildings, 500 businesses and 12,000 homes. Early estimates project economic damages for the fire have run into the billions of dollars.

Located in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, the Woolsey Fire was 100 percent contained by the Thanksgiving holiday. It burned nearly 100,000 acres, with its scar stretching from Thousand Oaks to Malibu. The fire’s perimeter includes homes with total values of billions of dollars and median values of at least $1 million.

At one point, more than 195,000 people were evacuated in the Woolsey Fire. It caused three deaths and damaged 1600 structures. Of those, 177 were homes.

Several prominent entertainment industry figures suffered losses in the Woolsey Fire. They include pop star Miley Cyrus, actors Gerard Butler and Alan Thicke and classic rock musician Neil Young. Many others were under evacuation orders at time and took to their social media accounts to inform fans of the fire’s impacts.

The damage, devastation and property loss of the Camp and Woolsey fires is a reminder of the importance of insurance to help home and business owners recover and rebuild after tragedy strikes.

Such scenarios can quickly turn into nightmares for homeowners. Owning your own home is considered a cornerstone of the American Dream. Many people who purchase their homes think of it a long-term financial investment in their families and communities. As such, the thought of potentially losing all the equity you’ve put into your home can be quite terrifying.
